What is the Pain Clinic?

Pain is a universal human experience that, when chronic or intense, can significantly diminish a person’s quality of life.

Recognising the need for specialised care in our community, the local NHS Trust plans to establish a state-of-the-art Pain Clinic at Teddington Health & Social Care Centre, located at Teddington Memorial Hospital.

This initiative aims to alleviate suffering and enhance the well-being and comfort of countless individuals in our community.

Our Pledge to Patient Experience

At the heart of the Pain Clinic project lies the patient experience.

The Friends of Teddington Memorial Hospital is committed to supporting patient improvements beyond the medical excellence provided by our local NHS.

In partnership with the NHS Trust and our community, we aim to create an environment where patients feel understood, valued, and supported throughout their treatment journey.

To achieve this vision, we are launching a targeted fundraising campaign to enhance patient experience within the Pain Clinic.

The Friends of Teddington Memorial Hospital has pledged to support this £1 million+ Pain Clinic project with a £150,000 contribution over the next two years for patient experience elements, funded partly by our ’70 for 70′ campaign in 2024.

The Need for a Pain Clinic

  • Limited Facilities: The excellent Chronic Pain Management Service at Kingston Hospital offers a range of interventions for people with chronic pain. However, the dedicated team has limited facilities and options for expansion, forcing some patients to endure unnecessary and prolonged suffering.
  • Increasing Demand: As our population ages and the prevalence of chronic diseases rises, the demand for specialised pain care is surging. Improved access to specific services in our community is urgently needed.
  • Economic and Emotional Impact: Unmanaged pain can lead to decreased quality of life, increased healthcare costs, and a strain on families and caregivers.

The Solution

The NHS Trust aims to provide comprehensive care from diagnosis to treatment and rehabilitation by establishing a new Pain Clinic at Teddington.

The Pain Clinic will offer a holistic approach to pain management, ensuring that patients receive tailored, multidisciplinary care.

Benefits to Our Community

  • Accessible Care: A local Pain Clinic provides services closer to home, reducing travel times and making it easier for patients, especially the elderly and those with mobility challenges, to access care.
  • Multidisciplinary Approach: A team of specialists and support staff will collaborate to create individual treatment plans, incorporating consultant anaesthetists, clinical psychologists, physiotherapists, specialist pain nurses, counsellors, and alternative therapists.
  • Patient and Community Well-being: By effectively addressing pain, we can enhance the overall health and vitality of patients and our community, fostering a more resilient and thriving population.

The Importance of Patient Experience

  • Holistic Healing: A positive patient experience contributes significantly to the overall well-being and recovery process. The Pain Clinic will be designed to provide services in a modern and pleasing environment, facilitating group work and the development of support networks.
  • Trust and Confidence: Building trust through exceptional patient care and support fosters a more effective patient-provider relationship. A patient-centric approach enhances patient care and communication, empowering patients with knowledge about their condition and treatment options.
  • Vital Elements of Patient Experience: Comfortable environments, compassionate care, and improved health outcomes are essential. The clinic will feature patient rooms and waiting areas designed and furnished with comfort in mind, incorporating soothing colours, ergonomic furniture, and calming decor.

The Friends Funding Goal

  • Fittings, Furnishings, and Equipment: Estimated at £49,000.
  • Internal Finishes: Wall decoration, flooring, and ceilings are estimated at £62,100.
  • Superstructure Refurbishment: Contribution to the frame, upper floors, roof, stairs and ramps, external walls, windows and external doors, internal walls, partitions, and doors is estimated at £38,900.
  • Total Funding Goal: £150,000
