A Glimpse Behind Closed Doors: Our Day at the NPL Bushy House Garden Party

In September, we were delighted to participate in the NPL Bushy House Garden Party, a wonderful celebration of 125 years of NPL that offered visitors a rare insight into the history and heritage of the National Physical Laboratory.

It was a privilege to host a stand at this event, where we had the opportunity to meet many curious minds, share in the excitement of exploring one of the UK’s most historic scientific institutions, and connect with supporters of The Friends.

Visitors were invited to stroll through the gardens, listen to live music and peep behind the normally closed doors of Bushy House and its laboratories.

Discovering the Legacy of Bushy House & NPL

The story of Bushy House is woven into the scientific history of Britain. The building began life in the 17th century, evolving over time through phases of rebuilding and refurbishment. By the early 20th century, it became the home of the National Physical Laboratory.

During the garden party, attendees had the rare chance to see internal lab spaces, learn about the history, and meet ‘icons of the past’ (figures in costume). Over the years, the active scientific work has moved to modern facilities, and Bushy House remains in use for conferences and heritage purposes.

Our Stand, Our Gratitude

We thank everyone who visited our stand and shared our enthusiasm for Teddington Memorial Hospital and the work we do to support the hospital and our community.

We also want to acknowledge the hard work of NPL in organising such an enjoyable day and the support of NPL employees in providing Christmas presents for patients and staff of Teddington Memorial Hospital during the festive period.
