Supporting Our Community for Over a Century

For generations, Teddington Memorial Hospital has stood at the heart of our community, supporting our community for over a century.

First as a place of care for local residents in need, and now as a modern, much-loved community hospital providing essential services close to home.

Alongside it, the League of Friends of Teddington Memorial Hospital has played an equally important role: championing the hospital, supporting its staff and enhancing patient experience for more than 70 years.

A Hospital Born from Philanthropy and Community Spirit

Teddington Memorial Hospital traces its origin back to the 19th century. Local philanthropists, with local people, recognised the need for accessible and affordable healthcare and came together to establish a small cottage hospital to serve Teddington and the surrounding area.

Over the decades, the hospital became a beloved local institution, including treating war casualties, providing general medical and outpatient care, and, in more recent years, focusing on rehabilitation and end-of-life care, urgent treatment, and a range of community health services.

Despite all the changes in healthcare over the last century, one thing has remained the same: the hospital’s commitment to caring for local people with compassion, care and skill.

The Birth of the League of Friends

The League of Friends of Teddington Memorial Hospital was formed as an independent charity in 1954. emerging from the same community spirit that created the hospital itself.

The hospital has been supporting our community for over a century.

As the NHS was still in its early years, local volunteers saw an opportunity to provide extra support by raising funds, offering time, and helping bridge the gap between what public funding could provide and what would make a real difference to patients and their hospital experience.

From the earliest days, the League focused on improving comfort, care and wellbeing. Volunteers ran fundraising events, managed the hospital shop and rallied local residents to support the hospital in every way they could.

Their efforts funded equipment, updated facilities and helped ensure that Teddington Memorial Hospital remained a warm, welcoming and well-resourced place of care.
