Thanks to the generous support of The League of Friends of Teddington Memorial Hospital, the Richmond Rehab Unit once again delivered supported MS dance classes through a second 8-week block of dance-based exercise classes for people living with Multiple Sclerosis (MS).
Delivered in person by Combination Dance Company, the weekly sessions offered two tailored classes designed to build movement, confidence and connection.
The initiative was a true team effort, with MS Specialist nurse Janice, Physiotherapist Ciaran and Nurse Administrator Kasia all contributing to its success.
Positive Feedback from Participants
The latest feedback shows just how impactful the sessions have been. From the ten responses received:
9 participants said the classes were ‘about the right level’.
Comments highlighted improvements in confidence, mobility and mood, including:
- ‘I really enjoyed it, it made me feel good.’
- ‘It’s good to be stretched and realise I can attempt movements I didn’t think were possible.’
- ‘I now realise that I do not move as much as I should.’
- ‘Faye is excellent and very encouraging.’
Participants also requested more sessions, including an additional weekly online class.
The social benefits were equally valued. Many attendees spoke about the joy of moving together, laughing together and rediscovering what their bodies can do.
A Pathway to Long-Term Movement
Because these sessions are designed as a taster experience, the aim is to support people with MS in continuing to exercise beyond their time with the rehab team.
- Joining Combination Dance’s online MS classes.
- Transitioning to a local permanent class, something being actively worked towards.
- Receiving follow-up physiotherapy support when needed.
Ciaran, the physiotherapist, also attended the sessions to answer questions and offer review appointments, where appropriate.
Looking Ahead
The impact of these supported MS Dance Classes is clear: they boost well-being and provide opportunities for socialising and shared movement.
Thanks to continued funding from The League of Friends, a further block of classes will run after Easter, bringing even more residents the chance to experience the joy and confidence that dance can bring.
