Celebrating Volunteers’ Week: The Heart of Our Hospital Shop

We’re celebrating Volunteers’ Week. It’s is a time to recognise and celebrate the remarkable people who give their time, energy and kindness to support others.

At the League of Friends of Teddington Memorial Hospital, we are proud to shine a spotlight on the dedicated volunteers who help run our hospital shop, a small space that makes a big difference every day.

More Than Just a Shop

For patients, visitors and staff, the hospital shop is often one of the first places they visit when they arrive at Teddington Memorial Hospital.

Whether someone needs a snack, a greeting card, a bottle of water or simply a friendly conversation, our volunteers are there to help.

The shop provides convenience and comfort, but its true value lies in the warm welcome and human connection offered by the people behind the counter. A smile, a few kind words or a helping hand can brighten someone’s day, particularly when they may be feeling anxious, unwell or worried about a loved one.

The Volunteers Who Make It Happen

Our hospital shop is operated by a wonderful team of volunteers who generously give their time throughout the week. They come from a variety of backgrounds and bring with them a wealth of experience, enthusiasm and compassion.

Some volunteers have supported the shop for many years, while others have joined more recently. What unites them is a shared commitment to supporting the hospital and the local community.

Their contributions include:

  • Serving customers and keeping shelves stocked and displays tidy.
  • Supporting the smooth day-to-day running of the shop.
  • Creating a friendly and welcoming environment for everyone who visits.

Every shift they complete helps ensure that the shop remains an important resource within the hospital.

Supporting the Hospital Community

The impact of our volunteers extends far beyond the shop counter.

The income generated through the hospital shop helps the League of Friends continue its work supporting Teddington Memorial Hospital.

Funds raised contribute towards projects, equipment and initiatives that enhance the experience of patients and staff.

By volunteering in the shop, our team members are providing a valued service each day, and also helping to generate resources that benefit the wider hospital community.

Why People Volunteer

Many of our volunteers tell us that they gain as much as they give. Volunteering offers opportunities to:

  • Meet new people and build friendships.
  • Learn new skills and gain experience.
  • Stay active and connected to the community.
  • Make a meaningful difference to the lives of others.
  • Support a local hospital that serves so many residents.

For many, volunteering becomes a rewarding and enjoyable part of their weekly routine.

A Heartfelt Thank You

As we’re celebrating Volunteers’ Week, we want to extend our sincere thanks to every volunteer who supports the League of Friends and, in particular, our hospital shop team.

Your generosity, reliability and kindness help create a welcoming atmosphere that is appreciated by patients, visitors and staff alike. You are an essential part of what makes Teddington Memorial Hospital such a special place.
